Why so many people simply learn to live with their nose and ear symptoms for years

A stuffy nose when you wake up. Pressure around the sinuses. Asking people to repeat themselves more and more often. A ringing or restless feeling in your ear.

These are small symptoms that can easily start to feel 'normal'.

But what is actually happening in your nose and ears — and why are researchers looking at red and near-infrared light?

Maybe this sounds familiar…

The same every morning

You wake up, try to breathe through your nose, and notice that one side already feels barely clear. Grab a tissue. Blow your nose. Get on with your day.

It always seems temporary

You try something that makes things feel a little more comfortable for a while… but a few hours or the next morning later, the same ritual starts all over again.

'Sorry, what did you say?'

At home you might barely notice it. But the moment multiple people talk at once or there's background noise, a conversation can suddenly become harder to follow.

So you learn to live with it

It happens gradually. That makes it easy to think: 'I must just be getting older.' or: 'My nose is just like this.'

But what if we take a closer look at what's actually happening?

Start with the cause

A 'stuffy nose' doesn't always mean your nose is simply full

[ADD ANIMATION / IMAGE] Normal nasal passage → swollen nasal mucosa → narrower airway
Recommended ratio: 1:1

Inside your nose is mucous membrane. That tissue is constantly in contact with the outside world: air, pollen, dust, and other irritants.

With allergic rhinitis, for example, an inflammatory response occurs in the nasal mucosa. This can be accompanied by swelling, nasal congestion, a runny nose, sneezing, and itching.

As a result, your nose can feel blocked even though the problem is not simply an excess of mucus.

More swelling
Less space in the nasal passage
More congested / blocked feeling

Why temporary relief is not the same as understanding what's happening

Symptoms

How do I make my nose feel more comfortable right now?

Underlying process

Why does the mucous membrane feel irritated or swollen?

Can biological processes in that tissue be influenced in a different way?

And here's where it gets interesting.

Light can influence biological processes.

Not as a metaphor. Literally.

The science behind the light

Meet photobiomodulation

In research, the application of specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light is often called photobiomodulation — abbreviated as PBM.

In PBM, light with certain properties is applied to biological tissue.

The interesting part is not only the light you see. The interesting part is what is being studied at the cellular level.

From light to cellular signaling

Light

Photons reach the tissue.

Mitochondria

Our cells contain mitochondria, which play an important role in cellular energy metabolism.

Light absorption

PBM research looks at, among other things, interactions with chromophores and mitochondrial processes, including cytochrome c oxidase.

Cellular signaling

Research describes changes in processes involving, among others, ATP, reactive oxygen signals, calcium, and nitric oxide.

Important to know

This does not mean that red light automatically treats every inflammation or condition. The effects of PBM depend on factors including wavelength, dose, application method, and the condition being studied.

Not every type of light behaves the same

The wavelength of light influences, among other things, how it is absorbed and scattered in biological tissue.

That is why PBM research studies different wavelengths within the red and near-infrared spectrum.

And that brings us back to your nose.

What does the research say?

Why researchers study light directly inside the nose

[ADD 3D NOSE VISUAL] Transparent nasal cross-section + local red/NIR light application

Research into nasal symptoms has looked at, among other things, intranasal low-level light therapy / photobiomodulation. In these studies, the light source is applied locally in or near the nose.

Randomized clinical study

Intranasal light therapy for allergic rhinitis

Research in people with allergic rhinitis has looked at intranasal low-level light therapy and changes in nasal symptoms and quality of life.

Systematic review intranasal PBM (2024)

A systematic review from 2024 pooled 16 studies. The researchers reported improvements in various before/after comparisons, but found no statistically significant benefit in the pooled comparison with placebo. There was also considerable heterogeneity and publication bias.

So… is it proven?

Not definitively.

There is currently insufficient evidence for a definitive clinical conclusion.

But promising.

There is sufficient scientific interest to study the application further.

Research into PBM or specific research devices is not the same as clinical proof for Vitalio itself.

Why is the light applied inside the nose?

Large external red lamp
External light source
(at a distance)
Local intranasal light source
Local application
(close to tissue)

With intranasal application, the light source is brought close to the relevant nasal tissue. That is fundamentally different from simply sitting in a room in front of a red lamp.

The starting point of the studied approach is local light application on or near the relevant tissue.

But while exploring this research area, something else stands out…

Photobiomodulation is not only being studied around the nose.

Research into red and near-infrared light is also being conducted around the ear.

Your ear is much more than the part you can see

Brain

Sound travels through a complex system before your brain ultimately interprets it.

Changes in hearing, tinnitus, or other ear symptoms can have many different causes. That is why sudden or persistent hearing changes should always be taken seriously.

But from research, an interesting question arose: what happens when red or near-infrared light is applied around the ear?
[ADD 3D ANIMATION] Anatomical ear cross-section + subtle local red/NIR application
Ratio 1:1

PBM is also being studied around the ear

Preclinical and clinical research has studied photobiomodulation in relation to, among other things, tinnitus and certain forms of hearing loss.

The proposed mechanisms align with broader PBM research into cellular energy metabolism, mitochondrial signaling, and cellular stress processes.

Two different areas. One striking field of research.

Both around the nose and around the ear, researchers are studying how specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light can be applied locally.

Why should a daily application have to be complicated?

What Vitalio IS

  • Wellness device for local red/NIR light application
  • Designed around specific wavelengths (660nm and 940nm)
  • One system for both nose and ear
  • Easy to use at home

What Vitalio is NOT

  • Not a medicine
  • No guarantee that symptoms will disappear
  • Not a proven treatment for hearing loss
  • Not a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment

The studies on this page study photobiomodulation, specific research protocols, and research equipment. They do not prove that Vitalio itself causes the same clinical results.

Did you recognize yourself?

Maybe it's time not just to accept your symptoms — but to first understand what's behind them.

If you've read this far, you now know why red and near-infrared light attracts so much scientific interest.

You also know what we don't yet know for certain.

Vitalio Duo is designed for people who want to make this technology a simple part of their daily wellness routine.

Vitalio is intended as a wellness product and not for the diagnosis, treatment, cure, or prevention of disease.

Research discussed on this page concerns photobiomodulation and specific research protocols/equipment and does not constitute proof that Vitalio causes the same results.

Results may vary per individual.

In the case of sudden hearing loss, severe or one-sided ear symptoms, breathing problems, persistent nasal symptoms, or other concerning symptoms, medical evaluation is recommended.
