What does light have to do with your ear?

Photobiomodulation is the research field in which specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light are applied to biological tissue.

The most studied hypothesis: cytochrome c oxidase — an enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain — functions as the primary photoreceptor. Absorption of specific wavelengths may modulate mitochondrial activity.

Cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) is complex IV in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. When CCO absorbs light in the red (600–700 nm) and near-infrared (700–1000 nm) wavelengths, this may influence ATP production, release nitric oxide (NO), and modulate reactive oxygen species (ROS). These effects have been observed in cell studies. What this means in intact tissue in living subjects, under what conditions, and with what dosage, is the subject of ongoing research.

PBM AND THE EAR

That is why researchers are studying local light application around the ear.

PBM research around the ear has looked at, among other things, tinnitus and certain forms of hearing loss.

Research protocols differ greatly in wavelength, dose, treatment duration, and application site.
